SEPI ITU INDAH
really? somehow i doubt that. after watching Sepi, i got the impression that it's pretentious and somewhat annoying. oh, don't blame me for saying that, blame the film.

i had huge expectations for this film. who wouldn't, after listening to all the hype from the local newspapers (and the TV, of course). the dissappointment i felt for the movie is so tangible i could feel the taste. sure, the cinematography is top-notch. sure KL has never been more beautiful than in this film (or in Cinta, for that matter). sure, some of the actors have surpass themselves in this film (especially Riezman Khuzaimi. too bad his appearance is very brief). sure, i can tell you a dozen more attractions of Sepi including wicked soundtrack and a beautiful poem but all of that mean nothing when the most important matters in a film are not taken care of; the storyline and the script.

fairytales don't work anymore in this day and age, especially in Malay films. i can deal wth the fact that almost everything in the film is too good to be true, even the fact that afdlin used I and you in the early part of the film and then changed to saya and awak later can also be forgiven, but do they have to carry on with it? (a case of syok sendiri) . the storyline lacked something important, the connection with the audience. i definitely didn't feel any sepi-ness while watching it.

and the script, goodness! i don't want to go into details about it. i think it is sufficient for me to say that it lacked something to be desired.

the soundtrack is definitely wicked, even though Gita Gutawa's voice has the ability to grate on one's nerves. i really like to hit anybody who said her voice is whispery, because it's not. she screeches, ok? and that is defintely not whispery.

i love the poem from Khalil Gibran read by Imaan (Baizura Kahar), even though the wig she wore definitely distracted me. the poem is like this:

bisikku pada bulan
kembalikan temanku
kekasihku, syurgaku

tanpa dia
malam menemaniku
sepi memelukku

bulan
jangan biar ia siang
biar alam ini kelam
biar ia sepi sepertiku

who can hate this poem, tell me? no one can, because it's the heart of the movie.
