Ateem posted a whole bunch of tweets about P Ramlee's songs which made me Youtube-d a whole bunch of P Ramlee's songs because well, because I like his songs haha aren't we all eh?
One of my favourites is this.
If you're thinking to yourself why this song sounds familiar, it's because you've heard it in Bujang Lapok.
Fun fact: Sudin (S. Shamsuddin) is actually an illiterate, even Mak Dara, the Nyonya Mansoor in Ibu Mertuaku was also an illiterate. So can you imagine the directing skills P Ramlee must have had while directing these two and a slew of other actors who were/are unable to read/write and how skilful he must be in coaxing the emotions from them? I mean, every actor nowadays can read but none of them can act as good as Nyonya Mansoor. Shame on you, present-day actors and actresses.
The man was beyond a genius.
Yes I know that was Ajis in the clip.
Fun fact part 2: There's a P Ramlee movie which tells the story about life insurance policy, it's one of the lesser known titles but I can't remember the title right now. I'll ask my Dad after this. Oh and you might think "oh well, life insurance, how boring" but before you dismiss this movie, let me tell you that life insurance policy only became popular in...I don't know, the 80s? The 90s? But P Ramlee first raised the issue in the 50s/60s, so you can imagine how forward-thinking the man was.
Too bad his forward-thinking ability didn't include saving for his children and copyrighting his works. I get sad whenever I think about that.

Funny I just had conversation about P.Ramlee copyrighting his works with my husband a few days back. Such a shame, no? Sesuka hati je orang mainkan movie dia sekarang. Good for us, I know. But somehow, it makes the movies seem less valuable than they really are.
Lagi sedih bila fikir yang TV stations makin kaya tapi tak payah bayar royalti to his family pun setiap kali pasang cerita dia.
