Katyn

So...Katyn. Where do I start?

Read here if you want to know what Katyn is all about.

It's a hella good film but somehow something is missing. The film focuses on too many characters that it detaches itself from any emotional upheaval that could've gotten it to the same level as Letters from Iwo Jima or maybe even The Bridge on the River Kwai. I don't know, I think it's too impersonal, but then it's to be expected maybe for a high-scale/full-scale movie.

I think it's a bit one-dimensional, since the story is told from the same perspectives. Usually, I'd applaud the lack of fake drama from a war movie but this time, I couldn't do the same and I can't explain why. Plus, it's a bit jumbled up because the jump from one year to another is confusing (only me je kot). The additional characters in the middle of the story add to the confusion too. And, as I said before, there are a few mysteries about the movie that's been bugging me like hell.

From my extensive research ( a.k.a a few mouse clicks) I've arrived to the conclusion that no one in this world knows what exactly happened in that Katyn Forest save for the people who actually killed and the people who permitted the killings. Even after authenticated documents related to the Katyn massacre had been produced, there are still some people (historians and such) who hold the belief that it might not be what other people thought it had been. So I'm taking a neutral stand about the Katyn massacre. It was very brave of Andzerj Wajda to make a film about the Katyn massacre, a sore subject in his homeland.

The film is not horrible. Like I said, it's pretty good actually. It's just not as epic as I thought it would be.
