i could have covered tsunami, i just couldn't get a flight

as you know, i went out with a friend from school last Saturday. despite our constant contact through YM, facebook, sms, and several calls, it was our first outing since, i don't know, a year maybe, so i was really glad to see her. it was only natural that she looks a little different since i saw her last. the first thing i noticed about her is that she put on weight. she stands at 5'9, so it wasn't that hard to see that she seems, well, a little weight-y. to make things fair, she noticed my extra weight too. so, no insults there.

except for that extra weight, she doesn't seem to change at all. now, i find that a little strange. her tastes in clothes (she still looks for long-sleeve t-shirts and shirts) and food are still the same as i remember. even more incredible, she still has a fixation on Justin Timberlake, the same person we mooned over when we were in Form 1. if not for her boycotts on anything American and Israel right now, i bet she would order double cheeseburger if we happened to eat at McDonalds.

i don't understand about the boycott on American and Israeli products. i don't even know any product that comes from Israel. i thought their only specialties are in making weapons and killing innocents. so, i found it ironic that this friend of mine, who so passionately lectured me about the people's suffering in Gaza and so set to go against my desire to eat at Carl's Jr was sporting an ELLE bag that day. not only that, she also tried clothes in US-based clothing boutiques like Guess?, and Gap. thank God that Esprit is now a Hong Kong brand, or i would have include Esprit also.

i don't understand why do we have to answer the calls to boycott American products. i really think i can smack some sense into these people for thinking about it. don't they know that Malaysian economy depends heavily on the US economy? even though the FTA between Malaysia and US has not been materialised yet, and trust me, it will be despite the protests, Malaysia and US have seeped advantages from the trades of both countries. US is also one of Malaysia's biggest investors, behind the Pak Arabs, UK, and Spain. the boycotts will only hurt us, and Malaysia will be hurt badly if this boycott is to continue. hell, the whole world will suffer badly if the economic downturn in US doesn't recover quickly. i don't know whether it's a blessing or a curse that US dollar is up by 0.0099 as i'm typing.

yes, i know, the Palestinians are suffering. we can help them, but not by boycotting the country that pays for those deadly weapons that kill them. US will continue to give billions and billions of money to Israel despite the whole world's anger. i don't even think that Obama can help this matter either. we can only pray that the Middle East nations will finally wake from their loooooong slumber and help their neighbour. for you people out there, include a prayer to them everytime you pray. i want to say that we should donate also, but i'm guessing that the money won't reach them. hey, if the UN workers and helps can't reach them, what are the chances that we can?

it's a very sad situation, and we're not helping matters by boycotting US products. thank God there's a ceasefire now, because my tears keep flowing everytime i watch the news. may there be a miracle for the Palestinians.
