Ayat-Ayat Cinta? the indonesian film received rave reviews from my family, and they, especially my sisters had been hounding me for days to make me watch it. and despite my sceptism and expectation of the cheesiness and the corniness of the indonesian films, i finally gave in. and, guess what? after 20 minutes into it, i couldn't take anymore. my brilliant mind and my critical eyes are definitely not up for romantic movies like this.
don't mistake me, i definitely enjoyed some romantic movies in the past, most notably Jerry Mcguire and Atonement. hell, i can even recite the whole lines in the films if you get my drift. but lately, romantic movies have lost its appeal to me. not even the celebrated Stardust can catch my interest. i'd rather choose something more adrenaline-pumping movies such as 300 or the deep, reserved movies like No Country For Old Men than something romantic. trust me, you'll get my meaning when i say that when i watched P/S:I Love You, the only thing that caught my eye was the presence of the ever smashing Gerard Butler. the fact that the movie was so lousy didn't help matters either.
if any of you thought that there is something wrong with me, please believe when i say i'm ok. please believe that i don't completely shy away from anything romantic. reading romantic novels is still one of my guilty pleasures, and i still go on dates, when i feel like it. the only thing that turns me off is watching romantic movies.
i remember when a few of my friends and i went to see the movie Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, i was astounded to learn that they hated it! it completely baffled me to know that. how can they say something like that, when the movie is one of the best movies i've watched this year? and do you know what's even astonishing? they thought Batman Begins was boring! and these are the people who thought that What Happened in Vegas is good enough!
